Oceana Public Library has more than tripled its total square footage, with the new addition that has been nearly eight years in the making.
The large space has been completed as funding has become available, according to Laura Mellon, branch manager.
Most of the new addition has been done with grant monies, explained Linda Maynor, assistant librarian.
The new space includes an area that will double the library area, along with a new room for the Story Hour program and a conference room that can be used by community groups for meetings; those interested are urged to phone the library at 304-682-6784.
It also provides space where student tutoring can be completed in private, Maynor said.
“We haven’t had that before,” she said.
While some project details remain, community groups and volunteers are working to make certain the final elements are completed.
Brothers of the Wheel members spent two days cutting the wall between the existing library space and the addition. Additionally, the volunteers erected a wall to create an office space for employees.
Ellis Lumber donated a large portion of the materials for the project, Mellon said.
The new Story Hour room has been decorated with a jungle theme. Colorful wall murals were painted by Kelly Dimbath. Gina Tichnell created the curtains. A “Thomas the Tank” quilt hanging was created by Judy Trent, Maynor said.
With the young Story Hour participants now working in the new space, it also leaves the main library room much quieter, she explained.
Both Mellon and Maynor lauded the assistance of the numerous volunteers as well as area businesses.
“The businesses are really good to us,” Mellon emphasized, noting their generosity makes some of the library programs possible.
Oceana Woman’s Club members have had a big hand in the added space, Mellon emphasized.
The club members have raised funding for new shelving, furniture, and coordinated the project completed by Brothers of the Wheel, she noted.
“This will allow us to open (the new space) sooner,” she said.
