Celebrating coal miners and the coal industry, this year’s Mullens Dogwood Festival is scheduled this week, May 5-9, using the theme “100 Years of Power — A Salute to Coal Miners and the Coal Industry.”
“When this festival theme was chosen in February of this year, little did we know how significant it would be,” said Susan England-Lord, festival chairman. “April 5, 2010 brought even more significance to this theme.
“All coal miners are very special individuals. They leave their families daily to work under the earth, never knowing what their shift might bring.
“They do it so that we can enjoy what we take for granted — the power in our homes, businesses, etc., happen because of their effort.”
Additionally, the festival is dedicated to Bill ‘Sarge’ McGhee and Rosalie Conner, “two of Mullens’ finest citizens and volunteers,” England-Lord emphasized.
“Both of these individuals have been working with the festival since its inception and continue to work to build a better, stronger Mullens.”
Numerous activities are planned throughout the festival, including the Mullens Fire Department hot dog sale, the 4-H pancake breakfast, spaghetti eating contest, bossy bingo, and the annual fireworks display following the Little Texas concert Saturday.
Meyers Amusements will open carnival rides daily at 6 p.m. and Saturday at noon.
The annual dogwood tree planting ceremony is scheduled Friday at 2 p.m. on the main stage in the city parking lot. Sponsored by Tankersley Funeral Home and Wyoming County 4-H, this event memorializes area residents.
Additionally there will be crafters, vendors, educational exhibits and programs.
Myriad contests will include the Mullens Idol competition, sponsored by JOEFM, set to begin Thursday at 6 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded.
Photography and poetry contestants can bring their entries to Mullens City Hall Wednesday-Friday from noon until 4 p.m. Judging will be done Saturday morning.
Saturday morning, the annual sidewalk chalk contest, sponsored by Butch McNeely State Farm, will be held in front of Mullens City Hall, as well as the Sweets and Eats Contest at the Veterans Memorial Building, England-Lord said.
Also on Saturday, registration for the Mullens Area Chamber of Commerce Car Show begins at 10 a.m. in the Rite Aid Parking Lot.
Bossy bingo is scheduled Sunday at 3 p.m.
