Pineville Volunteer Fire Department members will again sponsor the annual Wyoming County Labor Day Celebration in Pineville.

This year, organizers want “Hometown Heroes” to serve as grand marshals of the parade, according to Mike Goode, assistant fire chief.

Goode said the fire department is looking for ordinary folks from across Wyoming County, not public officials, for this project.

Firemen are asking residents to nominate someone who is an unsung hero, someone who works behind the scenes, someone who does things for neighbors or the church, someone who does good works without seeking credit or notoriety, he explained.

Nominations should be mailed to Pineville Fire Department, P.O. Box 220, Pineville, WV 24874 and include a brief description of why the person should be named a “Hometown Hero.” Additionally, those making the nominations should include his/her own name, address, and phone number.

The deadline is the end of June.

This year’s celebration will include crowd favorites such as carnival rides, a giant fireworks display, church service and gospel sing on the courthouse steps, along with the annual car show which will be held downtown due to the construction of the elementary school on the football field site, Goode said.

The fire department is also looking at adding some new entertainment to the annual celebration, but those are still in the planning stages, Goode emphasized.
