Armed with more than 60 warrants, police officers dispersed across Wyoming County early Wednesday to round-up those suspected of illegal drug activity.

“We always have ongoing drug investigations,” Sheriff Randall Aliff emphasized.

“This (year-long investigation) may be finishing, but we have others that are ongoing.”

He noted that just because authorities didn’t get a dealer Wednesday, didn’t mean they wouldn’t be arrested in the near future.

Aliff said he was concerned because a few of the arrests involved the sale of heroin.

“Most of it was prescription pills, but four or five of them were selling heroin,” Aliff said.

“We want to stop the heroin before it gets started here. So, if anyone has any information, we want to know it. They can remain anonymous,” Aliff said.

The sheriff said he fears that heroin dealers may be moving into Wyoming County.

Federal authorities warned officials a few years ago that once the drug trade is established in an area, heroin and the resulting activities, such as gangs and prostitution, will likely follow.

The investigation was led by Capt. Don Cook and involved the efforts of the Southern Regional Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department, the West Virginia State Police and the Oceana Police Department where most of the arrests were made.
